Any information on how the pax got en route? Looks like KELM only has 4 flights daily, 2 to DTW, 2 to FL. Did they just bus them the 2 hr drive to Rochester? (I've been bussed for a plane defect, KPWM - KMHT)

@A B The QRH for this issue only says land at nearest suitable. Not "immediately" like some others. Likely due to loss of second engine making them lose their thrust reverse and with KSYR being Slush at the time better to go to KELM
  • Benoit Hudson
    Benoit Hudson
    Vor Monat
@A B sure, and losing an engine is that. But just as the closest exit may be the one behind you, it could also be that the destination is the quickest airport to land at. Radon360 indicates they actually did save time, so the diversion makes sense.
  • radon360

    Vor Monat
@A B True enough. Yet paradoxically, the flight crew didn't didn't declare an emergency. I guess it's one of those cases where potentially following all of the procedures, at the end of it all, they really didn't get on the ground any faster.
  • A B
    A B

A lot of QRH procedures require “Land *immediately* at nearest suitable airport”, or “land at nearest suitable airport”. There is no discretion to continue for the pilots to even consider, dependent on the emergency.

@radon360 : so they saved 10 minutes? OK, I guess that makes sense to divert then.

WOW.. good judgement on the part of the pilots! less than 90 miles from their destination, probably already descending and getting setup for landing when they diverted! So close and so tempting to PUSH-ON. Good judgment, better safe than sorry with no good alternates between Elmira and Syracuse.
  • Sam Kirk
    Sam Kirk
    Vor Monat
Likely due to the runway conditions at the time in KSYR without an engine they wouldn't have all thrust reversers. And they can't land on a "contaminated" runway without them. Which was slush at the time.

I'm never surprised that ARFF has no fucking clue what is going on and how to do their job. Just about every video with ARFF in it is them being absolutely befuddled on how to operate. On top of that, they are an expensive asset. I hope that if I ever get in an aircraft emergency that I can put the fire out myself so I don't have to listen to them struggle.

Although I usually don't pan anyone but I have to say that the emergency truck was not the sharpest guy I've ever heard. He ask the fuel remaining and souls and got an answer from the tower and then asked again. What puzzled me was when the tower told him there were 49 souls on board he asked if it was a commercial flight. Did he think 49 people were on a flying bus? I realize he is operations but they didn't declare an emergency so he should have stayed off the air and listened.

@Don Schwartz Private jets do not carry that many passengers? Boeing offers a couple of 7x7 variants called 7x7-BBJ (Boeing business jet). Trump had a 757-BBJ; don’t know if he still does, but it’s probably been deadheaded a few times, perhaps to VCV. A better question from Truck 12 would’ve been the type of AC & HAZMAT, not what the AC's purpose is.

To all of my detractors I say this. He was told that it was Air Wisconsin and a flight number. Even if it were chartered it is still considered a commercial flight because it is being flow by a commercial carrier. Private jets do not carry that many passengers. Those are chartered by sport teams and use commercial carriers. ATC knew what was going on and the crew said they didn't need ground support.

@Justin Saltalamacchia Thanks, I suddenly remember parts of other videos like these where ground at JFK tells aircraft to monitor tower at 123.9 or something similar. So "tower" and "ground" are different, but everyone are sitting close to each other in the physical tower? Is it likely that truck 10 and truck 12 were talking to the same person, but on different frequencies and thus T12 was not aware that T10 already had the information?
  • Justin Saltalamacchia
    Justin Saltalamacchia
    Vor Monat
@Viktor Bengtsson in this case the trucks are either on the tower or ground frequency. So approach gets the info from the pilot, relays it to the tower position (in this case the tower and ground position are the same controller) who then relay the information the to fire trucks. The firetrucks only talked to the 1 controller for ground movement and info. Great question: The main difference between ground and local are pretty much that. Ground controls all movement on the ground for which they control. The local controller controls the runways and surrounding designated airspace.
  • Viktor Bengtsson
    Viktor Bengtsson
    Vor Monat
@Justin Saltalamacchia Thanks a lot for the clarification! So did I understand correctly that the trucks and the pilot talked to different persons? And what is the difference between the roles of ground and local? I guess ground is for taxi and generally moving around the taxiways. The things I know are mostly from watching these kind of videos from another channel, typically featuring Kennedy Steve.

I always feel like they should just roll out the trucks no matter what the emergency is about (which they seem to always do anyway, regardless of what the pilot requests). I mean, it's not really going to cost anything; the ARFF crews are there standing by anyway, so the "worst" case scenario is that the crew just got an extra live practice drill.

They also pull Ambulances, Engines, and Tankers from about a dozen surrounding towns, many of which only have one Tank or Ambulance. @Oleg Khad • You know what, as I was listening to it all, I had it in my mind that this was “Round 2” of the question/answer session, and then I second-guessed myself, incorrectly. (I was too lazy to rewind a little and check.) My memory is getting to be a mess! Got a BIG birthday coming up, lol. Anyway, you reminded me of the reason I need to double-check myself. That was really over the top repetition - but it was nice and clear!

It is the cleanest radio, but he was given all the info, why ask again for the exact same info? Souls ? Fuel? Runway? Call sign?
